The Government of Madhya Pradesh (GoMP) has displayed a strong commitment for the socio-economic development of the citizens, conservation of the state's rich biodiversity, its sustainable use for expanding livelihood security and ensuring equitable sharing of its benefits. In the 21st century Biotechnology has emerged as a distinct discipline with a greater vision for the future. The State envisages to harness the potential of Biotechnology to substantiate its commitment. For the same Madhya Pradesh Biotechnology Council (MPBTC) was established in 2006 under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Chief Minister. The Council is registered under Societies Registration Act 1973 and is functional with effect from 21-10-2003.Chief Secretary and Secretaries of various departments are on the board of the Council. There are also four ex-officials as members in the Board who are experts in the field of Biotechnology.

Unraveling Potato Genome Paves Way for New Varieties
The potato, number three on the list of the world's most popular food, has been genetically unraveled. Researchers from the Plant Breeding department at Wageningen UR (University & Research centre) and other colleagues involved in the international Potato Genome Sequencing Consortium (PGSC) in 14 countries have mapped the potato's hundreds of millions of building blocks. Their findings are reported in Nature.
